Chinese Advertising – Taiwanese Mango Ice Tea

Summer is fast approaching, which in Taiwan means 30C+ heat and humidity. Luckily Taiwan has some of the best Tea in the world, and every street corner has an ice tea shop. 50嵐 (50岚) is one of the most popular tea shops in the south of Taiwan, which would explain the long queues and 5 minute wait to get a tea. The advert below is their latest promotion (click for larger version).

Something worth noting is that the English at the top right contains some Pinyin: ”Bao Zhong”, this is interesting since the Chinese for this text doesn’t appear anywhere on the sign, and most Taiwanese (teachers aside) can’t read Pinyin. The Chinese for this is 包種茶 (包种茶) which appears (from the Wikipedia page) to be another name for 春茶.

Starting from the top left and working down, the Chinese is as follows:

新發售(新发售)

Pinyin: xīn fā shòu
Zhuyin: ㄒㄧㄣ ㄈㄚ ㄕㄡˋ
English: New (新) to go on sale (發售), notice that in the advert that the Japanese word “発” is used, which is different than both Traditional 發, and Simplified Chinese 发 forms. Using Japanese words in Taiwan is somewhat of a fashion.

芒果青(芒果青)

Pinyin: máng guǒ qīng
Zhuyin: ㄇㄤˊ ㄍㄨㄛˇ ㄑㄧㄥ
English: Mango (芒果) Oolong tea (清), 清 here is actually 清茶 “clear tea”. The usage of (青) here actually comes from Taiwanese (台語) and means ‘fresh’, ‘新鮮’. (thanks Joyce)

金黃(金黄)

Pinyin: jīn huáng
Zhuyin: ㄐㄧㄣ ㄏㄨㄤˊ
English: The colour of golden (金) yellow (黃)

誘人(诱人)

Pinyin: yòu rén
Zhuyin: ㄧㄡˋ ㄖㄣˊ
English: enticing, alluring. A 誘因 (诱因) is an incentive.

清爽(清爽)

Pinyin: qīng shuǎng
Zhuyin: ㄑㄧㄥ ㄕㄨㄤˇ
English: clear and refreshing, fresh and cool

義式芒果冰淇淋(义式芒果冰淇淋)

Pinyin: yì shì máng guǒ bīng qí lín
Zhuyin: ㄧˋ ㄕˋ ㄇㄤˊ ㄍㄨㄛˇ ㄅㄧㄥ ㄑㄧˊ ㄌㄧㄣˊ
English: Italian-style 義式 (義 here is short for 義大利/Italy), 芒果 we already know is mango, and lastly 冰淇淋 ice cream.

加上(加上)

Pinyin: jiā shàng
Zhuyin: ㄐㄧㄚ ㄕㄤˋ
English: this simply means ‘plus’, or ‘also with’

香醇(香醇)

Pinyin: xiāng chún
Zhuyin: ㄒㄧㄤ ㄔㄨㄣˊ
English: This one is difficult to translate into English, and something along the lines of “mellow/deep aroma”. If anyone has a better translation then please leave a message below! I’m told that coffee, or milk, can be described as 香醇 if that helps any.

回甘(回甘)

Pinyin: huí gān
Zhuyin: ㄏㄨㄟˊ ㄍㄢ
English: a sweet after-taste (回來的甜味)

四季春茶(四季春茶)

Pinyin: sì jì chūn chá
Zhuyin: ㄙˋ ㄐㄧˋ ㄔㄨㄣ ㄔㄚˊ
English: Four (四) Seasons (季) Spring (春) Tea (茶) – as in ‘Tea that can be harvested at any time of the year and the quality will always be as good as Spring harvested tea’.

變成(变成)

Pinyin: biàn chéng
Zhuyin: ㄅㄧㄢˋ ㄔㄥˊ
English: to turn into, to become (something else)

清爽(清爽)

Pinyin: qīng shuǎng
Zhuyin: ㄑㄧㄥ ㄕㄨㄤˇ
English: refreshing, fresh and cool

香甜(香甜)

Pinyin: xiāng tián
Zhuyin: ㄒㄧㄤ ㄊㄧㄢˊ
English: fragrant (香) and sweet (甜)

消暑聖品(消暑圣品)

Pinyin: xiāo shŭ shèng pǐn
Zhuyin: ㄒㄧㄠ ㄕㄨˇ ㄕㄥˋ ㄆㄧㄣˇ
English: 消 means to eliminate, 暑 means summer, or summer heat. While 聖品 is a sacred product, in this case an iced tea.

The full translation of the main text of the sign goes something like this:

The gold enticing colour of Italian style mango ice cream, with the added mellow aroma and sweet after taste of our Four Seasons Spring Tea, becomes a refreshing, fragrant, sweet sacred drink.

As some of these words don’t have direct translations into English, the overall feeling of the translation really depends on the translator – if you have an opinion on how to translate some of these words/phrases then please leave a message below:
