Chinese youth can’t “eat suffering” like previous generations

Following the Foxconn suicides during the first half of the year, analysts have been looking for the root cause of the problem. Among the sheer size of the factories, and management’s inability to connect with the workers, the Chinese youth’s inability to ‘eat suffering’ is often cited as a major contributing factor.

The following passage is taken from a China Times article dated 5th of May 2010:

深圳台協會長黃明智認為,以前大陸年輕人吃苦,企業規模不是太大,企業家會與員工共犯難;現在企業規模驚人,企業負責人已無法和員工接近,加上「八○」後、「九○」後年輕人都是一胎化產物,不如以前吃苦,這都是造成悲劇的原因之一。

The translation as follows:

President of the Taiwan Merchant Association of Shen Zhen, Huang Ming Zhi, believes that in the past Chinese youth could “eat suffering” (endure suffering), the scale of companies wasn’t as big, management and staff would work out difficulties together; but now the scale of companies is astonishing, management has no way to connect with the staff, this together with the 80s and 90s generations being a product of the one-child policy,  and unable to “eat suffering” like past generations, is a major contributing factor of these tragedies.
