When the court heard the case, they were unclear about the use of Zhuyin and gǎn líng yáng, so called upon online gamer Mr Li to testify. Mr Li explained that lots of online gamers insult each other in games, and as the server blocks certain swear words it’s impossible to write these words, so some gamers use Zhuyin or different characters to insult other people.

The court report indicated that Zhu, (36 years old, with a previous conviction for fruad) had used his ex-wife’s name to apply for an online gaming account and set his nickname to “Little girl Zhang Jun Ya”. Last year (he had also) been involved in a dispute with one Ms Huang who used the nickname “Duan Meng Qing”, and used insults such as “Ji”  and “Lao Ji Pai”, Zhu dispautes the claim, saying it was a typo.
