New Child of Taiwan kills grandfather over red envelope – Mini Chinese Lesson
A bit of a gruesome story, but one that illustrates the usage of a media term ‘new children of Taiwan’ (新台灣之子 xīn tái wān zhī zi) to describe the children of foreign brides (外籍新娘 wài jí xīn niáng ) who are often brought up in unstable family environments and are more at risk of running into difficulties when growing up.

“I just want to kill him!”. A 13 year old youngster from Chinghua County, surnamed Xie, dissatisfied that his grandfather didn’t give him a red envelope for Chinese new year, and that his demands for a $1000 prepaid mobile phone card were also refused, used a watermelon knife to chase and then chop his grandfather at least 20 times until he died. After the murder the youngster escaped in a vehicle, but was arrested by the police on a motorway slip road.
