Chinese Language H1N1 Poster: Please do as I do!

Just when you thought the H1N1 scare was over and we could back to our normal lives, this poster was photographed in a Kaohsiung City KMRT station (underground rail). The poster advises 5 types of behaviour to help reduce the threat of H1N1 :

It’s not quite visible from the image above, but at the top right it says 新型流感 (xīn xíng liú gǎn), 新型 is ‘new type’, while 流感 is flu. In Taiwan H1N1 was commonly refered to as 豬流感, literally ‘pig/swine flu’.

1. 出外手帕隨身帶 (出外手帕随身带)

Pinyin: chū wài shǒu pà suí shēn dài
Zhuyin: ㄔㄨ ㄨㄞˋ ㄕㄡˇ ㄆㄚˋ ㄙㄨㄟˊ ㄕㄣ ㄉㄞˋ
English: 出外 go outside, 手帕 handkerchief, 隨身 on your person, 帶 take
Translation: When going outside, take a handkerchief with you

2. 肥皂洗手殺菌好(肥皂洗手杀菌好)

Pinyin: féi zào xǐ shǒu shā jùn hǎo
Zhuyin: ㄈㄟˊ ㄗㄠˋ ㄒㄧˇ ㄕㄡˇ ㄕㄚ ㄐㄩㄣˋ ㄏㄠˇ
English: 肥皂 soap, 洗手 wash hands, 殺 kill, 菌 germs, 好 well, proper, okay
Translation: Wash your hands thoroughly to kill germs

3. 咳嗽外出戴口罩(咳嗽外出戴口罩)

Pinyin: ké sòu wài chū dài kǒu zhào
Zhuyin: ㄎㄜˊ ㄙㄡˋ ㄨㄞˋ ㄔㄨ ㄉㄞˋ ㄎㄡˇ ㄓㄠˋ
English: 咳嗽 cough, 外出 come out, 戴 wear, 口罩 face mask
Translation: When you are about to sneeze, wear a face mask

4. 生病在家多休息(生病在家多休息)

Pinyin: shēng bìng zài jiā duō xiū xí
Zhuyin: ㄕㄥ ㄅㄧㄥˋ ㄗㄞˋ ㄐㄧㄚ ㄉㄨㄛ ㄒㄧㄡ ㄒㄧˊ
English: 生病 ill/sick, 在家 at home, 多 much, 休息 rest
Translation: when you are sick stay at home and get ample rest

5. 施打疫苗保健康(施打疫苗保健康)

Pinyin: shī dǎ yì miáo bǎo jiàn kāng
Zhuyin: ㄕ ㄉㄚˇ ㄧˋ ㄇㄧㄠˊ ㄅㄠˇ ㄐㄧㄢˋ ㄎㄤ
English: 施打疫苗 get a shot of vaccination (施打 seems to be like: get a jab/shot), 保 maintain, 健康 heath
Translation: Get a vaccination jab to maintain health
