The Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) between China and Taiwan was signed last week, although the trade agreement has met with much opposition in Taiwan from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), taking the stance that ECFA will have adverse effects on Taiwan’s industry.
In this latest campaign, “Say No To ECFA”, the DDP use the mock Facebook profiles of both the Taiwanese and Chinese Presidents to convey their anti-ECFA message. Ma Ying-jiu and Hu Jin-tao are portrayed as best friends, both pushing the benefits of ECFA.The following pages of the leaflet tell the stories of normal people and how ECFA will negatively affect their business or way of life.
Regardless of your stance on ECFA there’s no denying that this is a brilliant example of marketing a political message.
The leaflet starts out by showing Ma’s and Hu’s “Factbook” profile, here you can see Taiwan President Ma’s profile, where he is proclaiming how ECFA will increase Taiwan’s competitiveness:
mǎ yīng jiŭ: ECFA shì bāng zhè rén mín zuò shēng yì tí shēng tái wān jìng zhēng lì
English : ECFA will help people do business, and increase Taiwan’s competitiveness
Pinyin: bāng zhù
Zhuyin: ㄅㄤ ㄓㄨˋ
English: to help, assist
Pinyin: shēng yì
Zhuyin: ㄕㄥ ㄧˋ
English: business, 做生意 to do business
Pinyin: tí shēng
Zhuyin: ㄊㄧˊ ㄕㄥ
English: to increase/raise
Pinyin: jìng zhēng lì
Zhuyin: ㄐㄧㄥˋ ㄓㄥ ㄌㄧˋ
hú jǐn tāo: xiǎo mǎ gē shuō de yī diǎn yě bú cuò! ECFA shì bāng zhù “liǎng àn dà qì yè jiā” zuò shēng yì, tí shēng “zhōng zī” zài tái wān de jìng zhēng lì!
English: You said it, mate! ECFA will help “Taiwan and China’s big businesses” do business, increasing Chinese investment in Taiwan’s competitiveness!
chén yún lín: xiǎo mǎ gē, jīn nián wǒ xiǎng qù tái wān yóu ge chéng qīng hú, dào shí kě bù kě yǐ qǐng tái wān gōng ān dà gē men zài bāng wǒ kāi ge dào nē?
English: President Ma, I want to come to Taiwan this year and go to Cheng Chin Lake, when I get there can you have the police force give me an escort again?
Possibly the most amusing part of this page is the very bottom, where you can see President Ma and Chiang Pin-kung (chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation) have ‘friended’ Hu Jintao:
mǎ yīng jiŭ hé jiāng bǐng kūn xiàn zài shì hú jǐn tāo de péng yǒu.
Ma Ying-jiu and Chiang Pin-kung (chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation) are now friends with Hu Jin-tao
On Hu Jin-tao’s page President Ma can be seen requesting to be in the next photo on his wall:
mǎ yīng jiŭ: hǎo jìng de hé zhào ā!! tāo gē xià huí wǒ yě yào gēn nǐ pāi yī zhāng!
English: such good group photos!! Nest time I want to take a photo with you!
Much more thought out than the last anti-ECFA campaign anyway!
