25 useful words for reading Hacking News in Chinese

We got some great feedback from the last in this series about Chinese keywords for reading technology news, so decided to follow up with hacking keywords and examples. Hacking has become a hot topic in the news recently, from hacking web pages and DDoS attacks to hacking user accounts of various social networks. Here we have drawn together a list of words and real-world examples that should provide a  solid base of Chinese words for reading hacker-related news in Chinese. All of the following words all appear in actual news stories and are in common use. There are a lot of words related hacking, it’s not easy to chose which words to include so we will continue this topic in the future, though in the meantime the following 25 words should be enough to get you going at the very least!

Hacking News Keywords

Last week we were sent a link to The Dark Visitor via Twitter, a document covering the history of hacking in China which contains a glossary of words related to the subject, well worth checking out if you are interested in this area of news.

As a lot of the following words will appear in multiple example sentences it might be worth having a scan over all of the words before proceeding to read the example sentences.

伺服器

Pinyin: sì fú qì
English: server, mainland China: 服务器(fú wù qì)

Example:

根據賽門鐵克的調查,該伺服器位於波蘭,是被駭客入侵佔用的網站

根据赛门铁克的调查,该伺服器位于波兰,是被骇客入侵占用的网站

gēn jù sài mén tiě kè de diào chá, gāi sì fú qì wèi yú pō lán, shì bèi hài kè rù qīn zhàn yòng de wǎng zhàn

According to a report by Symantec, the server is located in Poland, it was broken into by hackers who took over the website

瀏覽器 (浏览器)

Pinyin: liú lǎn qì
English: web browser

Example:

sài mén tiě kè rèn wéi zhè biǎo shì dà duō shù rén shǐ yòng de liú lǎn qì bú huì bèi cǐ lòu dòng yǐng xiǎng

Symantec believes this means that the browsers that most people use won’t be affected by this hole

網站(网站)

Pinyin: wǎng zhàn
English: web page is 網頁 (网页), but both 網站 and 網頁 are often used to describe a ‘website’

Pinyin: liáo tiān shì
English: an online forum/chat-room

Example:

guó tài yī yuàn biǎo shì, hài kè suǒ rù qīn yuàn nèi mǒu yī dān wèi zì xíng jià shè de liáo tiān shì wǎng yè

The Guotai Hospital said that the hacker had hacked into a forum that was set up by an employee

IP位址

Pinyin: IP wèi zhǐ
English: IP address

Example:

黑客最後使用的IP位址在台灣的國立交通大學

hēi kè zuì hòu shǐ yòng de IP wèi zhǐ zài tái wān de guó lì jiāo tōng dà xué

防火牆(防火墙)

Pinyin: fáng huǒ qiáng
English: a firewall

Example:

元智大學公共事務室主任蔡佩瓊說,資訊組巡視官網,並未遭駭客入侵,但會加強防火牆功能

English: a hacker, in China 黑客 is more commonly used

Example:

Pinyin: cuàn gǎi
English: to tamper with

Example:

English: to alter, to ammend

上傳 (上传)

Pinyin: shàng chuán
English: to upload

Example:

Pinyin: fēn sàn shì zŭ duàn gōng jí
English: distributed denial of service attack (DDoS)

Example:

Example:

They broke into well known companies websites and altered webpages, implanted trojan horse programs to steal server information, in addition to hacking the server database and stealing user account information

English: a botnet

Example:

Pinyin: jiāng shī dà shī

傀儡

Pinyin: kuǐ lěi
English: a puppet (see above for example)

Example:

more than 90% of companies have been infected with zombie viruses, all that is required is for the botnet master to move their fingers and command an attack, in a flash these companies computers will become the hacker’s puppets

跳板

Pinyin: tiào bǎn
English: a springboard

Pinyin: sǎn bō bìng dú
English: to distribute a virus

Example:

It is thought, after research, that it could have been a determined person that used Chiao Tung University’s network as a spring board to carry out hacker attacks and distribute viruses

    1. Hi John, cheers for bringing that up, I will add it to the notes above.

      You’ll probably find that most of the posts here have a Traditional Chinese/Taiwanese angle to them, but I always try to include Simplified and mainland variations whenever I know them.

      If you ever see anything that you know is different that I have missed then please let me know!

      btw I also check out your blog now and again, very good posts for maintaining a positive attitude toward learning Chinese.
